A Trip Back to the Olden Days

Today (August 29th) we took a trip downtown past the railroad tracks to visit our local museum. Since school started we've been learning about connections from the olden days to modern times. Shortly after we arrived a coal train came charging through town blowing its horn loud and clear down the Union Pacific Railroad.

Our first stop was the one room school house. Wow--things were really different back then! No need for your teacher to have a whistle during recess time, she could just ring the outside bell. We gave it a try...

Before school started each morning, the teacher would have to arrive early to start up the stove. Burr!

No drinking fountain, what?!

The lunch box back then was shaped more like a lunch bucket.

Students were seated in desks slightly different than our modern desks...

Every school needs a teacher of course!

We also learned how students used slates or small chalkboards instead of notebooks.

Hands up!

A very simple backpack...

2nd grade schoolhouse!

After the one room schoolhouse we were able to tour the caboose!

We learned about the living quarters inside...

The poles leading up to the windows to see the entire train...

Checking out the bunk beds...

Our class in front of the caboose.

Inside the red building we were able to check out a variety of items from the olden days. This pencil model of the old school in Ellsworth was created by a retired custodian who collected pencils for years and years. He used over 3,000 pencils to make this!

The general store...

The ladder was used to reach items too high to reach from the floor.

The post office...

A covered wagon.

Dentist chair...

What a great afternoon out learning about the olden days!
